Shop Local
interrobang is the last remaining traditional hot metal letterpress shop in the Boston/Cambridge metro area. Started in an apartment at the Monument in JP in 1992, type and design has been the focus of my interest and energy for almost three decades. Heavily invested in heavy metal, work is designed and printed using one of the largest collections of vintage foundry and wood type in New England. Everything is printed with restored mid-century presses and equipment. Folks come to interrobang for typographically savvy design using the original metal versions of some of the 20th century’s great typefaces & ornament. Much of the material I work with has never been digitized, or is unavailable anywhere else. This is real letterpress.
Over the years, I’ve amassed over 750 fonts of type for setting by hand, letter by letter, and have finished restoration of a Linotype Model 31 at the little commercial typesetting division of interrobang, linotypesetting.com which continues to offer hot metal composition from several series of distinguished and unusual book and display faces. The Linotype can cast ornament, and set type in unlimited quantities for books, and longer texts.
Typical commissions include fine invitations, announcements, and holiday cards, letterhead and business cards, personal stationery, note cards, books, booklets, bookplates, posters and broadsides, certificates of merit, limited edition music packaging, gift certificates, postcards, etc. Spanning five centuries of technology, I also offer logo design, digital book design and production, and digital font production and customization.
Some product is up on Etsy, but most of the design is bespoke; tailored to your needs, and budget. It’s all product of the head, hand, and heart using traditional skills, tools, and materials.
